3rd Party Digital Downloads Surpasses Entire Physical Sales On Nintendo eShop, Promise eShop Improvements

In an amazing feat, the third-party digital software sales on the Nintendo Switch and Nintendo 3DS eShop has eclipsed the entirety of Physical games sales.

Nintendo is gradually getting the hang of the digital marketplace. In a Nindies panel at GDC 2018, the company talked about how its digital sales of its third-party games for the Switch and the Nintendo 3DS are exceeding sales of its traditional “boxed” games in the US. It also went over its plans to (finally) improve navigation of the eShop.

This is to no surprise as the Switch alone has currently over 400 titles, most of which coming from third-party developers. With the increase in Switch ownership, as well as, the tendency for indies to release their games digital only, it was only a matter of time before digital sales eclipse the physical ones.

As a result, Nintendo has promised to improve the UI of their eShops, promoting better discoverability in the face of increasing clutter. Hopefully, the improvement will come in time for the Switch’s next big wave of games.
