Analyst: Nintendo Switch Is Succeeding In Japan, PS4 Failing To Sell At All

Esu Economics Research Center analyst Hideki Yasuda recently gave a penny of his thoughts on how the Switch and video game industry is faring in Japan and the world.

Yasuda, a widely respected analyst in Japan, says the markets believe Nintendo won’t be able to hit its goal of selling 20 million Nintendo Switch systems by this fiscal year ending March 31, 2019. Despite the bad news, he says if we look at the Japanese market, the Switch is doing very well as it’s outpacing the Wii since a few weeks ago.

Yasuda commented smartphone games are posing a threat to traditional consumer games, resulting in the PS4 failing to “sell at all” in Japan last year. Despite the difficulties faced, the Switch is somehow still moving in Japan, and Yasuda praises its ability to sell by calling it a “success”.

The analyst believes the Switch should be able to move around 18 million units by the end of the fiscal year, and even at 18 million units, Yasuda feels it is a remarkable achievement not inferior to how the PS4 did in its second year. Yasuda is also hearing good things about Switch sales in the west.

We’ll have a better picture of how Nintendo is doing on January 31, the day they release their results for the final quarter of this fiscal year.
