As Switch Firmware 5.0.0 Third Party Dock Issues Persist, Nintendo Recommends Officially Licensed Accessories

When Nintendo’s updated the Nintendo Switch’s firmware to version 5.0.0, a lot of third-party docks suddenly stopped working or, even worse, bricked consoles. These included LAN dongles and other dock related third-party accessories as well.

With Nyko being hit the worst out of this whole 5.0.0 firmware fiasco, a Nyko representative spoke to Kotaku, saying that they are aware of the situation, though more testing is required to identify the root cause of the situation.

“We are aware of the issue some Portable Docking Kit owners are facing after updating the firmware on their Nintendo Switch to version 5.0. Though further testing is still required to determine the exact root cause of the problem, we believe it is related to the way the Switch handles AV output for an external TV/monitor while the console is docked on the Portable Docking Kit.”

While Nyko race to fix their docks, Nintendo had other ideas in mind. Speaking to Kotaku, Nintendo recommended users to use Nintendo/ Nintendo Licensed products with their Switch only to minimise any compatibility problems.

“Unlicensed products and accessories do not undergo Nintendo’s testing and evaluation process. They might not work at all with our game systems, and they could have compatibility problems with certain games, the Nintendo Switch system itself, and other licensed accessories and peripherals.”

While Nintendo’s comments are not necessarily helpful for those who had their Switch bricked or third-party docks stop working, they did sort of provide a fix for everyone. Their fix for everyone is to use licensed products.
