Chinese Media Keeps Calling Nintendo President Shuntaro Furukawa “Shuntaro Tanikawa”

Today we have some very strange news about Nintendo President Shuntaro Furukawa’s name in mainland China.

According to Chinese Nintendo, Shuntaro Furukawa has often been misnamed as “Shuntaro Tanikawa” in China. Apparently the issue is so bad that even Nikkei China got his name wrong. The issue is very likely due to the fact the kanji “古川 俊太郎” and “谷川 俊太郎” are pronounced the same way in Mandarin.

The issue is so widespread in China that searching “Tanikawa” and “Nintendo” on Google comes up with Shuntaro Furukawa:

The situation is worse in China. When searching “Shuntaro Tanikawa” on Baidu, the largest search engine there, Baidu returns a result for a famous poet and translator.
