Detective Pikachu Writers Discuss Whether Ash Exists In Its Universe

We’ve already heard from the staff of Detective Pikachu about whether the film is canon to the games, but what about the franchise’s equally popular anime adaptation?

To get an answer to this question, Comicbook.com jumped straight to the point and asked Detective Pikachu writers Benji Samit and Dan Hernandez whether the Pokemon anime’s main character Ash Ketchum could potentially appear in a future sequel.

In response, Samit explained that from their perspective everything in the Pokemon universe was “fair game”, but their primary focus was on making Detective Pikachu great as a standalone film rather than putting too much emphasis on its connection to the wider Pokemon mythos.

Obviously we can’t speak for Legendary and the Pokemon Company. In our minds, this entire universe is fair game. When we were writing this movie, it was not only our goal but Rob [Letterman’s] goal, the studio’s goal, everyone’s goal, to really just focus on one movie. Tell a story. It has a beginning, a middle, and an end.

Samit’s response is pretty much in line with their previous statements regarding Detective Pikachu‘s relationship with the Pokemon games. They don’t rule out the possibility of Ash appearing entirely, but its still very much up to the Pokemon Company to decide. With rumors of a sequel already being in the works, we likely won’t have to wait too long before finding out if Ash will be making the jump to the live-action Pokemon films.

What do you think? Should Ash appear in a Detective Pikachu sequel? Let us know in the comments below.
