Dragon Quest Builders 2 Switch Outsells PS4 Version In Japan

Media Create has published their video game sales data in Japan from the period between December 24 and December 30, 2018.

As we’ve reported from GEO and Tsutaya earlier, Super Smash Bros. Ultimate and Super Mario Party are No. 1 and No. 2 on the bestseller charts respectively. Super Smash Bros. Ultimate sold 253,977 copies last week, bumping up lifetime sales to 2.3 million units. Super Mario Party has now sold 764,853 copies in Japan thanks to an increase of 86,265 copies.

In line with our earlier report from Famitsu, Mario Kart 8 Deluxe has exceeded 2 million copies sold in its entire lifetime. Minecraft for Nintendo Switch has exceeded 500,000 units after moving 32,294 copies.

Although the PS4 version of Dragon Quest Builders 2 sold slightly more than the Switch version at launch, the Switch version has overtaken it in 2 weeks. After selling 38,014 units last week, the Switch version has now sold 165,418 copies, as compared to the PS4’s 163,882. The gap should become wider in the weeks to come.

Christmas week was also the same week Japan saw the release of three new games, but they didn’t rank highly on the bestseller charts. The games are Go Vacation (Switch / No. 12 / 13,041 copies), Mario + Luigi: Bowser’s Inside Story + Bowser Jr.’s Journey (3DS / No. 15 / 9178 copies), and Diablo III: Eternal Collection (Switch / No. 16 / 9151 copies).

Last but not least, Nintendo Switch was the bestselling hardware in Japan at 186,806 systems sold. This is a drop from the 300,661 consoles it moved the prior week. Nevertheless, it’s still crazy to see how well it’s doing in Japan.
