Famitsu Reviews Mario Tennis Aces, Gives It 33 Out Of 40 Points

The Weekly Famitsu have released their review for Mario Tennis Aces, making it the very first review for the game in the world.

Out of 4 reviewers, three gave the game an 8 and one awarded it a 9. The final score for the review is 33 out of 40 points. Reviewers say they enjoyed the new offensive and defensive features and story mode.

Famitsu says the game can be enjoyed by anyone and depending on the play style of the player, time to complete the game will vary.

1st reviewer: The usual series’ good point of letting people enjoy deep offense & defense with simple controls is still intact. On top of that, with the implementation of new features such as “accelerate” and “aiming” which uses the energy gauge, the tactics breadth is enlargened even further. The rule where a player is defeated by knockout if all of the rackets in their possession are broken, while giving a stimulus, may be only liked by some and not by others. The existences of Story Mode and Swing Mode, the latter of which allows you to directly control a Joy-Con like a racket, are also good. 8

2nd reviewer: By adding actions that can be unleashed by consuming the energy gauge, it generates more tactics other than the normal tennis part which makes it hype. The Story Mode, while may feel a bit stern, has stages with various gimmicks on each of them, so it’s interesting that you have to use your head [to think]. You may need to be familiar with the Swing Mode’s gameplay to get the hang of it, but you can properly hit things, so the overall content is worth doing. 8

3rd reviewer: Being able to “aim” with a gyro pinpoint is ground-breaking. The player on the other side will have to decide on whether to let it go while considering damage to the racket or to attempt to do a block that won’t leave any damage; this tactic maintains a good tension. The additions of energy gauge and shots make it a bit complex, but the Story Mode has unique stages that lets you improve while playing them. The big ball in Swing Mode is floaty which gives a mysterious gameplay sensation. 9

4th reviewer: Just like [past series], this turns the real thrill of tennis into a game very well. Especially in this game, new systems have been added from the offensive features “aiming” & “racket destruction” to the defensive ones “acceleration” & “block”. So the tactics in offense & defense are enhanced even further. There’s an impression that it has elevated the strategy element as a tennis game. The Story Mode is like an action RPG with tennis as a theme. You can also feel the freshness in each gimmick, so there is enough replay value. 8
