Final Fantasy X / X-2 HD Remaster Western Retail Version Still Requires Game Card Inserted To Play Final Fantasy X-2

Final Fantasy X / X-2 HD Remaster Western Retail Version Still Requires Game Card Inserted To Play Final Fantasy X-2

Previously, we’ve reported on the annoying debacle surrounding Final Fantasy X / X-2 HD Remaster’s physical release in western countries. Namely, one half of the package is not actually on the game cartridge, but must be downloaded through a one-use code.

Now that retail copies of the game are in players’ hands, they’re discovering another enraging caveat about this download code. Apparently, even though the code downloads a digital copy of Final Fantasy X-2 onto one’s console, owners still need to insert the Final Fantasy X / X-2 HD Remaster cartridge to access that content!

Even though Final Fantasy X-2 is a download, while X is on the card, you can’t play it unless you have the card in. from r/NintendoSwitch

This certainly feels like the worst of both worlds. If such players lose access to their Switch accounts, they will lose access to the digital content of Final Fantasy X-2. However, they cannot even enjoy the convenience of having Final Fantasy X-2 in digital form – which is essentially chained to the cartridge anyway.

If you want to avoid such confusing shenanigans from Square-Enix, you should purchase the Asian retail release by Bandai Namco instead. The Asian physical version of Final Fantasy X / X-2 HD Remaster contains both games and extra contents all on one cartridge – with no downloads required.
