Four Rumors That Came True During This Week’s Nintendo Direct

This week, Nintendo held an awesome Nintendo Direct that revealed many new products and Nintendo Switch games coming in 2018 and beyond.

In the lead up to the Nintendo Direct, we’ve reported many rumors that turned out to be true during the Nintendo Direct. Let’s take a look at what came true and look back at how things developed.

1. New Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe

Several weeks before the Nintendo Direct, industry insider Liam Robertson reported murmurs on New Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe for Nintendo Switch, While he didn’t reveal a date, he got the name correct.

2. Wireless NES Controllers

This wasn’t a rumor but more a report. Thanks to the efforts of dataminers, we found the existence of NES and Famicom controller images on upcoming firmware update version 6.0.0 for Nintendo Switch. In our report, we believed this was an indication of Nintendo planning to release official controllers for Switch, and it turned out to be true. The same will happen for the SNES and Super Famicom controllers next year.

3. Animal Crossing for Nintendo Switch

A day before the Nintendo Direct, Eurogamer editor Tom Phillips and another industry insider at ResetERA both teased an Animal Crossing announcement to be made during the Direct. During the Direct, we learned Isabelle was heading to Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, and that the Animal Crossing Switch game arrives in 2019. The rumor had a lot of credibility due to the people behind it and we have always believed Animal Crossing Switch was due for a June 2019 release.

4. Nintendo Switch Super Smash Bros. Ultimate Set

The most important rumor of all was the Nintendo Switch Super Smash Bros. Ultimate Set that leaked at French retailer Carrefour two weeks before the Direct, first reported by NintendoSoup in the Americas. Despite the low quality photo, we were able to verify it was authentic with our sources in the supply chain. We called it “100% real” in our second report. Everything right to the design of the dock was 100% accurate.
