Furukawa Says This Fiscal Year’s 15 Million Switch 2 Hardware Goal Isn’t Influenced By Tariffs

Nintendo has published their online Q&A session with investors on May 9, 2025.

The first question asked was how Nintendo decided to make selling 15 million units of Nintendo Switch 2 hardware their goal this fiscal year. Nintendo president Shuntaro Furukawa explained that this goal was based on how the Switch did in its first 10 months, and they aim to “achieve a launch that’s on the same level” as Nintendo Switch.

Here are his full comments translated by NintendoSoup:

We estimate that we will ship 15 million units of Nintendo Switch 2 hardware in the current fiscal year. This figure is based on the number of Nintendo Switch units sold from its launch in March 2017 to December 2017 (10 months).

Since Nintendo Switch 2 costs more than Nintendo Switch, we are aware that this is an obstacle for its adoption in the initial phase. That being said, Nintendo Switch 2 is able to play Nintendo Switch software and is a continuation of the platform. In addition, in order to hasten its adoption in its first year, we are bundling software together with the hardware, and aim to elevate it to the same level as Nintendo Switch.

Furthermore, this figure is not based on production limits. This also doesn’t mean that the figures take into account the tariff situation in the US and other economic factors. To achieve our goal of selling 15 million units, we have to make more units than that. First of all we will aim to achieve a launch that’s on the same level as Nintendo Switch, and respond flexibly and accordingly to demand as we strengthen our production systems.
