Game Freak Speaks Up on Why Ultra Sun/Moon is on the 3DS and not the Switch

While the sequel to Pokemon Sun and Moon was rumoured to be on the Nintendo Switch, many were caught by surprise when Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon were slated for the 3DS instead. To try to explain why this was so, GameSpot has talked to Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon producer Shigeru Ohmori.

According to Shigeru Ohmori, the sequel to Sun and Moon were never intended to be on the Nintendo Switch, instead, they were always trying to push the limits of the 3DS hardware.

”We’ve been working with the 3DS hardware since Pokemon X and Y. Even then we wanted to get the maximum power and maximum potential out of the 3DS, and ever since then we’ve continued to try [to do] that. With X and Y we thought we’d got as much as we could out, but then Sun and Moon came along and we pushed even harder and got as much as we could out of the system at that time. And now, again, with Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon, we’ve tried to make this the pinnacle of our work with the 3DS system and make it a culmination of all our efforts to get the absolute most out of the system that we can.”

In any case, disappointed Switch gamers need not be so disappointed, with a core Pokemon RPG for the Nintendo Switch already under development, it should not be long before we get to see more of it. Until then, Pokemon Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon will just have to bide the time.
