Hyrule Warriors: Definitive Edition Scores 77 On Metacritic

The first reviews for Hyrule Warriors: Definitive Edition have started flowing in ahead of its May 18 launch on Nintendo Switch.

Critic reviews have generally been favorable, even though this is the second time the game has been ported over to another system (Hyrule Warriors is currently on Switch, Wii U, and 3DS).

We’ve rounded up some reviews which you can check out below.

Cubed3 (90/100)

It might have taken a couple tries to get the formula right, but Hyrule Warriors: Definitive Edition is exemplary. Much can be said about the absurd amount of content, but what really takes this game to the next level are the various refinements. The item card shop alone makes a world of difference for dedicated adventurers. There’s also the enhanced frame-rate, which lends a better sense of control and situational awareness to the player. They are better equipped to notice those subtle changes in enemy behaviour, or realise when a massive attack is coming.

Shack News (90/100)

Hyrule Warriors Definitive Edition offers up a lot of content and does a great job of compelling players to unlock more of it. As long as everyone knows what they’re getting into though I would definitely recommend this game to fans of the Dynasty Warriors franchise regardless of their familiarity with Zelda. I’d also give a thumbs up to fans of the Zelda games that are into arcade-style action every now and again.

COG Connected (85/100)

It’s safe to say that for those who haven’t experienced this title in its previous forms, Hyrule Warriors: Definitive Edition is a no-brainer. It features the biggest roster, the most content, and plays well at home or on the go, despite some technical issues. Those who may have only played one of the 3DS or Wii U versions would also be making a very safe bet in this case, but ultimately, this is just a solid choice for any party that is interested in seeing Link and friends (and foes) kick all kinds of ass across what is essentially a love-letter to fans of the series.

Nintenderos (94/100)

Hyrule Warriors is not for everyone, but it is undoubtedly an excellent musou game with a huge amount of content that, together with the theme and characters of The Legend Of Zelda, can please both fans of the genre as well as lovers of the Nintendo saga.

FANDOM (70/100)

The Zelda skin helps keep things fresh, keep things different enough to warrant a purchase of this for even the most veteran Musou fans. If you’re new to the games but like Zelda, don’t go in expecting a masterpiece. But if you’re down for simple, popcorn-movie like fun you can’t go wrong with Hyrule Warriors: Definitive Edition. There’s a ton of content, multiple fan-favourite characters, and an over-the-top, cheese-ridden story.

VG247 (no score)

Hyrule Warriors Definitive Edition lives up to its name: it’s the best version of this game, and this game is also the best in the Warriors series. Zelda fans should be aware of what they’re getting into, as those who expect the nuance of regular Zelda will be sorely disappointed. If you want to hack, slash and experience an exciting, fan service assisted power trip, however, Hyrule Warriors will fit the bill nicely.
