LoZ: Breath of the Wild Developers Talk About Zelda’s Retroactively Stitched Timeline, BoTW’s Place In It

It is quite well known that the Zelda Universe’s timeline was stitched together only after the games are made and that the developers usually made whatever Zelda game they wished before thinking about where it fits in the whole lore of games. However, are they actually even concerned about the timeline, especially the one that they’ve retroactively built?

In an interview with GamesRadar, Breath of the Wild Producer, Eiji Aonuma, as well as, Director Hidemaro Fujibayashi commented on the series’ timeline.

For Aonuma, he wishes to leave Breath of the Wild’s placing in the Zelda lore up to the fans’ imagination. In fact, he said that they are quite afraid of putting a definite place for the game.

“We published a book with the timeline, but we definitely got comments from users saying, ‘Is this really accurate? I think this should be this way. It’s different.’ And history is always kind of imaginative. It’s left to the person who writes the book. So that’s how we approach it as well. It’s not necessarily that we come up with a game and think, ‘Oh, this is where it fits in the timeline.’ Honestly, lately, we’re kind of scared to say exactly where things are in the timeline for that reason. But we like to leave things to the imagination most of the time.”

Fujibayashi reinforced on the fact that the team was not very concerned with the timeline. Although he knows that fans delve very deep into it, he, same with Aonuma, is not ready to put Breath of the Wild on the timeline.

“I wouldn’t say that we’re not concerned with the timeline,” Fujibayashi began. “It’s obviously something that we know is very important to people, and they do a lot of research on. But I think at this point, we’re not really at the stage where we want to talk about where Breath of the Wild is in the timeline. I think, as with the pixelated food [Editor’s note: of course I had to ask them what Dubious Food really looks like], it’s something that at this point we want to leave up to people’s imaginations.”

So that leaves it up to you, the fans. Where do you think Breath of the Wild fits in in the grand scheme of things? If you want to know more, you can head to GamesRadar here to read the full interview.
