Miyamoto Shares The Origins Behind The Upcoming Super Mario Movie

In the latest Weekly Famitsu interview with Nintendo fellow Shigeru Miyamoto, the creator revealed the origins behind the upcoming Super Mario movie that’s being created in partnership with Illumination.

According to Miyamoto, Nintendo first thought they could make a movie on their own with the same number of employees and assets they need to make a game. Miyamoto objected to this idea as he felt it would be “rude against movie directors” and feared Mario “wouldn’t be used to his own liking in the movies.” Later on, the idea of a Mario movie opened up again after the success of Virtual Console.

After Miyamoto started working with Universal for Super Nintendo World, he would eventually meet Chris Meledandri from Illumination. The two would talk to each other. One day, Meledandri gathered quotes from Miyamoto’s past interviews and noted that both of them had “similar ways of making and thinking”.

After Meledandri shared with Miyamoto about his past failures, Meledandri had gained the trust of Miyamoto and so they decided to work together on the Super Mario movie.
