Mortal Kombat 11: Netherealm Confirms Cosmetic Only Microtransactions

Earlier today, Netherealm Studios announced that the upcoming Mortal Kombat 11 will allow players to pay real money for in-game cosmetics through microtransactions.

During their Kombat Kast presentation, Moral Kombat 11‘s producer Shaun Himmerick introduced a new virtual currency for title called “Time Crystals”, which can be exchanged for a variety of in-game cosmetic items. These items include “skins, gear, victory animations, intros”, as well as a consumables that allows players to bypass controller inputs for fatalities. It was also confirmed that none of the items that can be bought with “Time Crystals” will be “pay-to-win”, and give paying players and edge over the competition online.

Likely aware of the bad rep microtransactions have in the gaming community, Himmerick assured fans that all of these cosmetics can be earned through gameplay without having to buy “Time Crystals”. The purpose of the “Time Crystals” is apparently just to provide an alternative method of unlocking the content that doesn’t involve grinding.

“Nothing in the game requires time crystals at all,” said Himmerick. “You can play the whole game — unlock all the stuff there — without ever dealing with the time crystals. Or if you want, you can get time crystals and shortcut your way.”

Mortal Kombat 11 will be released for Switch on April 23rd for North America, and May 10 for Europe.
