Nintendo: Creating Let’s Play Videos Are Okay, No Comment On Creating Fan Art

The Nikkei has published a report on Nintendo’s new stance on creative works after it replaced the Nintendo Creators Program with new guidelines for creators who intend to monetize their videos.

First, the company explained why they ended the Nintendo Creators Program and opted for laxer guidelines. Nintendo said they found that Let’s Play videos and other gameplay videos have helped to convey the appeal of games to viewers and consumers. Thus, creators on Youtube and NicoNico could now fully monetize Let’s Play videos of Nintendo games if they wanted to.

In Japan, fan art and Doujinshin (magazines published by fans featuring characters from other copyright holders) could be found just about almost everywhere. When Nintendo was asked what they thought about fan art and Doujinshin, the company said it’s up to the creators’ interpretation of copyright law.
