Nintendo Does Not Have Any Defense Against Hostile Takeovers By Other Companies

In the last year or so we have heard about a hostile takeover threat of Ubisoft that thankfully died down, as well as talks of certain companies considering to buy over Nintendo.

So during the investor’s Q&A session for the fiscal year ending March 31, 2019, an investor raised an interesting question – does Nintendo have any countermeasures against companies planning a hostile takeover?

Nintendo President Shuntaro Furukawa admitted that Nintendo, at this time, does not have any countermeasures against hostile takeovers. He added that Nintendo’s management is also legally responsible if such hostile takeovers were to happen, even if they have not introduced any defenses in advance.

In order to develop such plans, Nintendo has created a system of internal and external collaboration. One example is the fact that their management is staffed by directors from outside the company. Furukawa ensures the investor that they will continue researching ways against hostile takeovers.
