Earlier this week Nintendo published their latest earnings report for the nine months ending December 31st 2024, revealing updated sales numbers and expectations for the Switch console.
Despite the hybrid system crossing the 150 million sales milestone, Nintendo reported that the Switch’s sales were down 30.6 percent year-on-year, with software sales similarly falling 24.4 percent. Nintendo blamed this on 2024’s lineup being a tough comparison with 2023’s, the latter including Tears of The Kingdom and Super Mario Bros. Wonder.
The latest results proved to be significantly lower than the company’s previous forecast, forcing them to lower their expectations again, predicting that they will end the fiscal year in March 31st with a net sales of 1.19tn yen (down 7 percent) and a net profit of 270m yen (down 10 percent).
While it is tempting to say that the declining sales were exacerbated by the Switch 2 announcement, Nintendo President Shuntaro Furukawa believes that this is not the case. Speaking to investors (reported by The Sankei Shimbun), Furukawa had this to say about the situation:
“We don’t think the impact of refraining from purchasing [because of Switch 2] is that great. We think it’s a solid eighth year, but we haven’t reached our target.”
It generally sounds like the current low sales are the natural result of the Switch being over eight years old. It will be interesting to see where the Switch’s sales finally end up once we fully transition into the Switch 2 era.
