Back in 2017, Nintendo’s official Super Mario website stated that Mario was no longer a plumber. Instead, he drives karts, plays lots of sports, and is basically an all rounder. The same goes for Luigi.

It seems that Nintendo has updated their official site this year again, clarifying that he is “indeed a plumber”. However, his occupation isn’t just confined to working as a plumber.
