NPD: Nintendo Switch Did Very Well In January 2019, Only Console To Show Year-On-Year Growth

NPD, the company that tracks video game sales data in the United States, has published their full results today.

Looking at the overall video game industry, January 2019 fared worse than January 2018 as total video game sales were down by 19% from USD1.1 billion to USD893 million.

Despite the decline in the industry, Nintendo Switch saw double digit percentage sales growth in their software titles in January 2019. It’s also the only console to show year-on-year growth, and was the bestselling console in January 2019 in terms of dollar and unit sales.

Here are the top bestsellers across all platforms for January 2019. New Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe came in at No. 3, and Super Smash Bros. Ultimate at No. 5:

Here are the top bestsellers for Nintendo Switch and 3DS:

New Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe, which launched in January 2019, saw launch month dollar sales 30% higher than New Super Mario Bros. U, which launched on Wii U back in 2012. Nintendo Switch Pro Controller was the bestselling accessory in January in terms of dollar sales. It saw an increase of 40% when compared on year-on-year.
