NSO Version of Startropics Missing Important Code Needed To Progress

Those of you playing Startropics on Nintendo Switch Online may find yourself stuck due to a glaring oversight.

According to u/BooJoh on Reddit, the NSO version of Startropics is missing an important 3-digit code required in Chapter 4. This code was originally found on a real-life letter included in the game’s manual, way back when it was first released for the NES. A character in-game would instruct the player to physically dip the real-life letter in water to get the code needed to progress.

While a cool feature for its time, physical game manuals are no longer as popular in the digital age. When Startropics released for the Wii U Virtual Console, an image and explanation of the letter was included in the game’s virtual manual:

The original instruction manual for StarTropics included a physical letter to Mike from Dr. Jones printed on parchment. When dipped in water, the letter revealed further instructions for Mike. See below for the immersed version of the letter.

Strangely, the NSO version apparently contains no such explanation or image. This means that first-time players would be unable to get past the point in the game that requires the code by themselves. They would either have to guess the code, or search for the solution online, possibly after fruitlessly hunting for it in-game. The missing code seems like a major oversight on Nintendo’s part, especially since they had a workaround in place when Startropics released on Virtual Console.
