Platinum Games Pleased With Astral Chain’s Success, Confirms The IP Is Co-Owned By Nintendo

Last week, we reported that Astral Chain had sold over 1 million copies on the Nintendo Switch.

In an interview with VGC, Platinum studio head Atsushi Inaba shared their thoughts on how the game has done so far, revealing that they are quite happy with its performance. This is good news given that they previously said any potential sequels were dependent on how well the first game did.

“Of course we are very, very pleased with Astral Chain’s success. In particular, the feedback that we’ve gotten from reviews is very high. We hear that it’s been sold out in a lot of places, so we’re very pleased. We make the game, we don’t sell the games, so to get that kind of confirmation from users makes us very happy.”

In addition, Inaba also confirmed that Astral Chain is “co-owned” by Nintendo, meaning that they own the publishing rights and will ultimately decide whether it can be released on other platforms. The Wonderful 101 however, appears to be an “exclusive case”, with multiplatform support covered through Kickstarter.

“In the case of Astral Chain, it’s an IP that’s owned half by Platinum and half by Nintendo. …Ultimately it’s Nintendo’s call (if the game hits other platforms), not ours. They own the publishing rights to Astral Chain so really we have no say in that matter. We consider The Wonderful 101 an exclusive case.”
