Rumor: Nintendo Had Another Fire Emblem Remake For 3DS In The Works, But Canceled It

Some time back, fans may recall that Nintendo brought Fire Emblem Echoes: Shadows of Valentia to 3DS. The game was a remake of Fire Emblem Gaiden (Famicom, 1992) and essentially updated its story with full voice-acting and beautiful artwork. Since then, we’ve not received another such remake – although it looks like there were originally plans for one!

In a recent episode of the Kinda Funny Games Daily podcast, Game Informer’s former senior editor Imran Khan revealed that Nintendo had actually scrapped plans for a second Fire Emblem series remake on 3DS. According to Khan, this was in part due to the worsening sales of 3DS titles at the time – with the final nail in the coffin being Mario & Luigi: Bowser’s Inside Story + Bowser Jr’s Journey, which sold so poorly that it sped up the bankruptcy of its developer AlphaDream. In response, Nintendo canceled various remakes it had in mind for the 3DS, including the unnamed Fire Emblem project.

You can check out the whole conversation below (starts at 44:47; Khan mentions the cancelled Fire Emblem remake at 46:08).

As with all unconfirmed information, we do urge our readers to take these details with a grain of skepticism. We’ll report back if we ever hear more about more Fire Emblem remakes in the future.

In the meantime: which Fire Emblem game do you feel needs a remake the most today? Which would be your dream pick? Feel free to share your thoughts below!
