Rumor: Nintendo Planning Smaller Switch 2 Cart Sizes As Alternative To Game-Key Cards

Earlier this year, Nintendo introduced Game-Key Cards, a new type of game cartridge that does not include actual game, but a license to download any play a digital version from the eshop.

Much to the dismay of those who prefer physical games, many developers and even Nintendo themselves are quickly adopting Game-Key cards for their physical releases.  At the moment, it is believed that the reason for this is that Switch 2 carts are only being produced in 64GB storage sizes, forcing developers to pay high costs even if their game is nowhere near that size. This makes Game-Key cards an enticing alternative for these developers, among other reasons.

However, rumors have now surfaced that Nintendo is working on producing Switch 2 carts in smaller sizes, specifically 16GB and 32GB. Presumably, these smaller cart sizes would serve as less expensive alternatives to Game-Key cards for developers, allowing them to once again release physical games that are actually on the cart.

That said, Game-Key cards will likely remain the most cost-effective form of physical release for publishers, and the go-to option for those who wish to maintain good profit margins. Stay tuned for more updates as they come.
