Samurai Shodown’s Director Thinks That Making All Of Its Fighters Perfectly Balanced Is ‘Boring’

While Sakurai continues to obsess over balancing everything in the Super Smash Bros. series, the team behind the Samurai Shodown reboot seem to be taking quite a different approach.

During a recent Kotaku interview, the game’s director Nobuyuki Kuroki was queried about whether more balance patches would be hitting the game’s recent PS4, PC, and Xbox releases – as some characters had more advantages over others in the competitive scene so far.

Kuroki responded that balance patches were indeed on the way, but also added an interesting caveat. Namely, he cautions current players not to expect too much balance to even out all the characters – as it wasn’t his vision for the game:

“I feel that if you make everything too flat in a game like Samurai Shodown, it’s going to be boring. There is a lot of character personality, even among how weak or strong they are. There’s going to be some balancing, but we’re never going to make it completely flat.”

Talk about going against the collective grain! It will be interesting to see the fighting game community’s response to this approach in the future.

Samurai Shodown will be heading to Nintendo Switch later this year, in Winter 2019. We’ll report back when further details about the title emerge.
