Sonic Team Director Reveals How He Arranged The Mega Man 4 Medley For Smash Bros. Ultimate

Last week, a member of the Sonic Team, Tomoya Ohtani, revealed the process of how he created one of Splatoon 2’s tracks for Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. This week Sonic Team sound director Jun Senoue has also revealed he’s taken part in arranging music for Smash Bros. Ultimate.

First, Senoue revealed he was very surprised to receive an invitation to arrange music for Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. The song that he picked to arrange was the Mega Man 4 medley. Seonue explained he had always wanted to work on songs related to Mega Man, so he chose to arrange the Mega Man 4 medley. Another thing that inspired him to choose the medley was a comic featuring Sonic and Mega Man that launched in the United States.

Thanks to that inspiration, Senoue decided to create Mega Man music with his own “Sonic touch”. He also pointed out besides giving the song his own touch, it was important for the essence of the song to remain in tact so fans can easily recognize it.

Another reason why he chose the Mega Man 4 medley was because he was hooked to Mega Man 4 when he was in college. Senoue didn’t want to modify the game’s original melody, but just add some “excitement” and make other changes. Senoue had three versions of the medley in mind but at the end of the day, the final version was a mix of all three versions.

Seonue was satisfied with the final product and ended off saying that his take on the medley is “a piece of Mega Man music with the flavor of instruments from the Sonic Adventures series”.
