In the latest Did You Know Gaming? video, it was revealed that Nintendo almost implemented top down perspective gameplay in Super Mario Bros. 3.

The idea was eventually scrapped in favor of the side scrolling gameplay found in Super Mario Bros. and Super Mario Bros. 2. Remains of the top down perspective system could  be found in Super Mario Bros. 3’s world maps.
