The world is starting to be more connected and yet at the same time, a little scarier. With the threat of extremism on the rise, extremist groups are turning to multiplayer games to radicalise troubled individuals.
According to Christian Picciolin, a peace advocate that was once part of an extremist group, White Supremacist groups are using online multiplayer to recruit marginalised youths seeking the comfort of a social circle.
“Absolutely! We sought marginalized youth and promised them ‘Paradise’. Today they are using nefarious tactics like going to depression and mental health forums and in multiplayer gaming to recruit those same people.”
It is unknown how successful the extremist groups are at their work but Picciolin advised that people should be more observant about the way extremist groups are spreading and recruiting for their ideology.
