Yooka-Laylee Developer Announces “Playtonic Friends” Publishing Division, 3 New Games In the works

Earlier this week, Yooka-Laylee studio Playtonic had teased at something new in the works. Well, we’ve finally learnt what the company is up to – and it looks like it’ll be extending a helping hand to other videogame developers!

Playtonic has revealed its very own publishing label, titled “Playtonic Friends” – which will be offering publishing assistance to smaller indie studios. The company also announced that Playtonic Friends is already working with three new games by (1) Bullets Per Minute developer Awe Interactive, (2) Slime-san creators Fabraz, and (3) Ok Golf studio Okidokico.

Of course, Playtonic assured fans that it would still be primarily a developer, even while embarking on this new initiative:

“It’s just about finding those games and developers with real potential, that want to do something long-term, and that we can help them… that’s the important thing. As an operation we’re still going to be 90%, developer, 10% publisher, but with an eye on self-publishing in the future, we’re going to have skills and expertise in-house to help other people. The net result is hopefully that more games not only come out, but they come out with more chance for the developer to be sustainable moving forward.”

“We’re not being corporate about this at all. We’re not looking to become a publisher to drive our growth. We’re not looking at spreadsheets and future forecasting and saying: ‘Hey, this needs to go up to this point, and then go higher and higher, steeper and steeper.’ It’s still about making sure we can make the games that we want to make, and now we hope we can help others along the way.

We’ll report back when we hear hear more about these new titles from Playtonic Friends. Stay tuned!
