52% Of Third-Party Switch 2 Physical Game Sales Are Game-Key Cards According To Amazon Japan
Earlier, we shared some Nintendo Switch 2 hardware and accessory sales data for the last 30 days on Amazon Japan. Now, it’s time to take a closer look at how Nintendo Switch 2 physical releases are selling.
According to data on Amazon Japan, the top five bestselling Nintendo Switch 2 physical releases are Mario Kart World (2,200 units), Donkey Kong Bananza (1,050 units), Rune Factory: Guardians of Azuma Nintendo Switch 2 Edition (900 units), Tamagotchi Plaza Nintendo Switch 2 Edition (800 units), and Yakuza 0 Director’s Cut (700 units).
Out of the top 5 bestselling physical games, four are completely new titles, and one (Yakuza 0 Director’s Cut) is a late port coming to Nintendo Switch 2. In addition, Yakuza 0 Director’s Cut is the only title that is on a Game-Key Card.
But how are Game-Key Cards faring against Game Card releases? Generally speaking, they seem to be holding up well. Game-Key Cards such as Yakuza 0 Director’s Cut (700 units) and Bravely Default: Flying Fairy HD Remaster (500 units) are selling better or the same as Game Card releases such as Cyberpunk 2077 Ultimate Edition (500 units), The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild Nintendo Switch 2 Edition (300 units), and The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom Nintendo Switch 2 Edition (200 units).
This shows that Game-Key Cards aren’t heavily affecting the purchasing decisions of Japanese customers, but this could of course change in the future.
If we were to compare physical games across different categories, we can tell that Game Cards across Nintendo Switch 2 exclusive software and Nintendo Switch 2 Edition software make up close to 70% of all physical games:
- All Nintendo Switch 2 exclusive software (Game Cards) – over 3,750 units (41.4%)
- All Nintendo Switch 2 exclusive software (Game-Key Cards) – over 2,700 units (29.8%)
- All Nintendo Switch 2 Edition software (Game Cards) – over 2,550 units (28.2%)
- All Nintendo Switch 2 Edition software (Code-in-box) – over 50 units (0.055%)
- Total across all software – over 9,050 units (100%)
However, the above comparison isn’t painting a full picture as all first-party Nintendo titles are on Game Cards, which could skew the numbers in their favor. Narrowing down the totals to just third-party titles reveals that Game-Key Cards are purchased the most when compared to other third-party Game Cards and code-in-box releases:
- Third-party Nintendo Switch 2 exclusive software (Game Cards) – over 500 units (9.8%)
- Third-party Nintendo Switch 2 exclusive software (Game-Key Cards) – over 2,700 units (52.9%)
- Third-party Nintendo Switch 2 Edition software (Game Cards) – over 1,850 units (36.3%)
- Third-party Nintendo Switch 2 Edition software (Code-in-box) – over 50 units (1%)
- Total across all third-party software- over 5,100 units (100%)
Current Amazon Japan data also shows a physical game (inclusive of games launching after June 5) to hardware attach rate of 0.149. If the full game downloads for Mario Kart World in the Nintendo Switch 2 Mario Kart World sets are counted as physical games, the attach rate increases to 0.974.
And here’s all the data. Note that some titles have been omitted due to lack of data, and we have consolidated sales numbers from all SKUs (such as those that include Amazon Japan pre-order bonuses), so long as we are able to see their unit sales (unit sales cannot be seen for SKUs that have sold out or don’t have enough data).
