GDC: 45% Game Developers Are Very Interested In Nintendo Switch
GDC has published a report on the state of the video game industry revealing what game developers are thinking about the platforms that are currently out in the market. The results come from a survey sent to developers in the video game industry.
The first question developers were asked was which platform their last game was released on. Nintendo Switch came in at 9%, a 4% increase from the year before:
- Xbox 360 – 3%
- Xbox One X – 20%
- PlayStation 3 – 2%
- PlayStation 4 / Pro – 24%
- Nintendo Switch – 9%
- Smartphones / Tablets – 33%
- Internet browser – 9%
- PC – 56%
- Mac – 15%
- Linux – 8%
- RV Helmets – 12%
- Helmets of RA – 3%
- Desktop games – 2%
- Others – 8%
Next, the developers were asked which platform(s) they are currently developing their games for. Switch came in at 18%, an increase from 12%:
- Xbox 360 – 2%
- Xbox One X – 28%
- PlayStation 4 / Pro – 31%
- Nintendo Switch – 18%
- Smartphones / Tablets – 38%
- Internet browser – 10%
- PC – 66%
- Mac – 20%
- Linux – 10%
- RV Helmets – 17%
- Helmets RA – 7%
- Voice games (Amazon Alexa, Google Home, etc.) – 2%
- Desktop games – 4%
- Others – 7%
When asked which platform they plan to release their next title, 22% went with Nintendo Switch:
- Xbox 360 – 2%
- Xbox One / X – 29%
- PlayStation 4 / Pro – 32%
- Nintendo Switch – 22%
- Smartphones / Tablets – 35%
- Internet browser – 8%
- PC – 62%
- Mac – 20%
- Linux – 10%
- RV Helmets – 14%
- Helmets RA – 6%
- Voice games (Amazon Alexa, Google Home, etc.) – 2%
- Desktop games – 3%
- Others – 5%
Most interestingly, Nintendo Switch is the platform developers are most interested in at this time, similar to the year before. The percentage has increased from 36% to 45%:
- Xbox 360 – 2%
- Xbox One X – 28%
- PlayStation 4 / Pro – 38%
- Nintendo 3DS – 2%
- Nintendo Switch – 45%
- Smartphones / Tablets – 33%
- Apple TV – 2%
- Internet browser – 10%
- PC – 60%
- Mac – 14%
- Linux – 8%
- RV Helmets – 27%
- Helmets RA – 20%
- Voice games (Amazon Alexa, Google Home, etc.) – 5%
- Table games – 10%
- Others – 5%
Last but not least, 24% of developers said their games have sold better on Switch than other platforms, as compared to 20% experiencing the same sales and 12% facing lower sales:
- Switch sales have been better than in the rest of platforms – 24%
- Sales in Switch have been the same as in the other platforms – 20%
- Sales at Switch have been lower than on the rest of the platforms- 12%
- It does not answer because the game has been released only on Switch or other reasons – 43%
