Pokemon Pokopia Interview Reveals Cloud Island Feature And More

Famitsu has published a lengthy interview with the developers of Pokopia, detailed some new features and behind-the-scenes info about the upcoming Pokemon life simulation title.

The interviewees include Kanako Murata from The Pokemon Company, Shigeru Ohmori from Game Freak, as well as Takuto Edagawa and Marina Ayano from Koei Tecmo.

Among the new info revealed is the Cloud Island feature which will allow multiple players to share an island without needing the host to be online, similar to a Minecraft server. There are also details about how the idea for Pokopia came about from Game Freak, and the start of their collaboration with Koei Tecmo to bring it to life.

Check out a summary below:

Pokopia Origins

  • Development started roughly when work on Pokémon Scarlet/Violet was finished
  • A small team of about three people began prototyping
  • Roughly six months later the devs shared their idea with the Pokémon Company
  • The team even prepared a concept video to push the idea, and that same video was used later in a Nintendo Direct
  • The dev team had philosophical discussions about how the relationship of trust with Pokémon is fostered
  • Ditto was chosen as the main character since Pokémon aren’t very good at using tools, but with Ditto transforming into a human, the issue would be solved
  • More Omega Force (Koei Tecmo) people worked on this title than any other in their history
  • Every element of the game was created together with Game Freak and The Pokémon Company
  • Localization presented some interesting challenges, including the unique way Pokémon speak to one another
  • The art director and sound director shared a common phrase early in development; “chill & pop”
  • Music was made considering two themes; “creation and transformation,” and “reconstruction and recovery”

Gameplay Details

  • Story mode ending can be reached between 20 to 40 hours
  • When it comes to building, you can have Pokémon build a building over time, or you can stack the blocks yourself

Multiplayer

  • Players can either visit the town of a host player, or work together to develop a “Blank Town” separate from Story Mode
  • Cloud Island allows multiple players to develop an island together, even if the island owner is not online.

Pokemon Pokopia launches March 5th 2026 for Switch 2.
