Dragon Quest V For DS Re-Enters Japanese Bestseller Charts, Nine Years After Its Original Release
An old Dragon Quest classic has seemingly resurrected from the grave in Japan.
Earlier this week, we reported on the top games of last week’s Japanese sales charts. Somewhere further down that list, however, was the DS remake of Dragon Quest V: Hand of the Heavenly Bride for Nintendo DS, at 28th place!
The classic RPG actually sold 1,905 copies last week, which was more than what Super Mario Odyssey managed in the same time! And, yes, the game was published more than 9 years ago!
26) [PS4] Labyrinth Life (D3Publisher) {2019.08.01} – 1.977 / NEW
27) [NSW] Doraemon: Story of Seasons (Bandai Namco Games) {2019.06.13} – 1.951 / 82.507
28) [NDS] Dragon Quest V: Hand of the Heavenly Bride (Square Enix) {2010.03.04} – 1.905 / 192.683
29) [NSW] Super Mario Odyssey (Nintendo) {2017.10.27} – 1.735 / 1.989.942
30) [NSW] Taiko no Tatsujin: Drum ‘n’ Fun! (Bandai Namco Games) {2018.07.19} – 1.730 / 353.459
There’s a pretty likely explanation for this sudden surge in sales. Recently, the Dragon Quest: Your Story movie premiered in Japanese cinemas – and it loosely adapts the events of Dragon Quest V: Hand of the Heavenly Bride! It’s quite possible that some hardcore fans bought the game to re-experience the movie’s source material.
Whatever the case may be, it’s nice to see such a beloved classic get its day in the limelight again. Perhaps Square Enix should figure out how to remake the game once more for modern consoles!
