Former Mojang Business Developer Says Discussions About Minecraft Joining Smash Bros. Began “At Least 5” Years Ago

Earlier this week, Nintendo revealed that Minecraft‘s Steve & Alex would be the new DLC fighters joining Super Smash Bros. Ultimate as part of Fighter’s Pass 2.

That said, it appears that discussions about Minecraft being represented in the game have been going on for quite some time, dating back to before Smash Ultimate had even been released.

In a post on Twitter, Daniel ‘Kappische’ Kaplan, a former business developer for Mojang, said that discussions about Minecraft‘s inclusion began “at least five” years ago. That said, he could not comment on when actual implementation started.

Although there is no way to know for sure exactly why it took so long for Minecraft to finally appear in Smash, it may have something to do with how challenging it was to translate Minecraft’s gameplay into a fighter, which Smash Bros. creator Masahiro Sakurai hinted at during the initial reveal. Presumably, we’ll hear more behind the scenes details during the “Steve & Alex” presentation coming later today.
