Guide: How To Dodge Blue Shells In Mario Kart World

The Blue Shell is one of the most powerful and hated items in Mario Kart World. It travels at a rapid speed to attack the player in first place, but do you know there are multiple ways to dodge it? We’ll introduce some  ways of dodging the Blue Shell in this guide.

1. Super Horn

The easiest way to dodge a blue shell is by acquiring and using the Super Horn item. Simply use the Super Horn when the Blue Shell is hovering above your head to destroy it.

While it’s possible to get a Super Horn in first place, it’s a rare pull. It’s easier to get the Super Horn in second to fifth place.

2. Mushroom

Another way of dodging a blue shell is by using a mushroom, but you will have to time it right to dodge it. Based on reports from players who have tested the game, it seems that the timing is more or less the same in both Mario Kart World and Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, and you have a higher chance of dodging a blue shell even if you get the timing off.

You should use the mushroom only when the blue shell pauses briefly before it lands on you.

Mushrooms can usually be acquired from second place onward.

3. Dash Food (unconfirmed)

In Mario Kart World, you can get a speed boost by using Dash Food. There are three tiers of Dash Food, each giving a different speed boost.

It’s currently unclear whether you can use Dash Food to dodge blue shells, but considering that they work the same way as mushrooms, you might be able to dodge blue shells with tier one and tier two Dash Food.

Keep in mind that the timing of using it should be the same as the mushroom.

4. Wall Riding and Rail Riding

You can dodge blue shells by wall riding and rail riding before they reach you. Timing is essential to pulling this off, and you need to monitor the minimap in the bottom right corner of the screen. You can’t do it too late or too early, otherwise the blue shell will end up following you.

In the video (timestamped at 4:27) below, you can see how the player was riding on a rail and switching over to a wall to dodge a blue shell. After the player switched from rail riding to wall riding, the blue shell stopped targeting the player in first place, and attacked the player in second place instead.

5. Rewind

You can rewind to dodge blue shells in Mario Kart World by simply rewinding before the blue shell lands on you. Please note that rewind can only be used in single player races, so you can’t use rewind in online and local multiplayer races. Also, other racers may overtake you if you rewind too much.

6. Driving into obstacles

Similar to Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, you can dodge blue shells by running into obstacles on the track just before the blue shell hits you. While running into obstacles like bananas and shells may slow you down, they don’t slow you down as much as getting hit by a blue shell. You get a few seconds of invincibility after driving into an obstacle, so this will save you from getting slowed down by a blue shell.

7. Falling off the course (not recommended)

Similar to Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, you can deliberately fall off the course to avoid getting hit by a blue shell. However, we do not recommend doing this in Mario Kart World, as getting rescued by Lakitu may actually slow you down even more than a blue shell. This is because depending on where you fall off, Lakitu will simply bring you back to your original position mid air, which will slow you down even more.
