On April 1, 2019, the Japanese Imperial Household Agency announced the name of the new Imperial Era which is due to start on May 1 when Crown Prince Naruhito ascends to the throne.

The name of the new era is Reiwa, which means “good fortune” and “peace”. Reiwa is the new era succeeding the Heisei era, which has lasted for 31 years.

As you can tell this is a very important day for the Japanese people. One Japanese Pokemon trainer, @tsunuthu_pepepe, commemorated the announcement by creating mock boxarts for Pokemon Heisei and Pokemon Reiwa:

Pepepe also asked followers which era they would choose in this generation.
