Nintendo Confirms That Around 160,000 Nintendo Network IDs May Have Been Illegally Accessed
In the past few weeks, there have been murmurs of a breach in Nintendo’s online infrastructure – with unspecified individuals worming their way into several Nintendo Network accounts (used for 3DS and Wii U). Well, it turns out that speculation was unfortunately true.
Nintendo Co. Ltd confirmed today that as many as 160,000 Nintendo Network IDs (NNIDs) were illegally accessed by third parties. Of course, this also means users who log into their Nintendo Account (for Switch) using NNIDs are at risk – which likely explains why Nintendo has been so vocal about activating Two-Step Verification recently.
For now, it looks like credit card information was not among the information that was compromised – although some private details such as name and birth date might have been accessed. In view of this, Nintendo has disabled the ability to login to any Nintendo account with a Nintendo Network ID.
