Nintendo Hunting Down Zelda: Tears Of The Kingdom Artbook Leaker On Discord

A few months back, an artbook for The Legend Of Zelda: Tears Of The Kingdom was leaked online, which contained some major spoilers for the game.

Following this leak, Nintendo is now taking action to track down its source. According to reports, Nintendo began by issuing a quick DMCA takedown to “Tears of the Kingdom Official Discord Server.” in February, which was where the leaks originated. The DMCA was first against the links being shared, and then against the entire Discord server itself. Nintendo notably objected to the use of the word “Official” in the server title, since it was not affiliated or operated by Nintendo.

Then, earlier this month, Nintendo Of America filed a DMCA subpoena against Discord in California, this time demanding that they reveal the identity of a user going by Julien#2743, who Nintendo is holding responsible for the leaks. Although details are a bit murky, this user is either the owner of the Discord channel where the leaks were shared, or possibly the one who posted the links to them.

“[Nintendo of America] is requesting the attached proposed subpoena that would order Discord Inc. …to disclose the identity, including the name(s), address(es), telephone number(s), and e-mail addresses(es) of the user Julien#2743, who is responsible for posting infringing content that appeared at the following channel Discord channel Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom..[..].

This case is quite similar to the subpoena filed by The Pokemon Company back in 2019 to identify individuals who leaked a Pokemon Sword And Shield strategy guide ahead of the games’ release. That lawsuit ended with the leakers being caught and sued for damages, although it remains to be seen whether this Tears Of The Kingdom case will end the same way.
