Nintendo Japan Eshop Will Stop Accepting Foreign Credit Cards In March 2025
Nintendo has announced they are ending support for foreign credit cards on the Japanese eshop.
From March 25th 2025, players will no longer be allowed to make purchases on the Japanese eshop using overseas credit cards and paypal accounts. According to Nintendo’s official announcement on the topic, this is being done to prevent “fraudulent use”.

In order to prevent fraudulent use, the Nintendo eShop(※1) and My Nintendo Store(※2) for Japan will stop accepting credit cards issued overseas and PayPal accounts opened overseas from Tuesday, March 25, 2025.
For customers who have previously used overseas-issued credit cards or PayPal accounts opened overseas, we ask that you please use other payment methods, such as credit cards issued in Japan, from now on.
We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause and appreciate your understanding.
This change may pose a problem for overseas fans who used to buy Japan exclusive titles by making a Japanese Nintendo account on their Switch. Unless they are somehow able to get ahold of a Japanese credit card, the only other option for overseas fans to make purchases on the Japanese eshop is to buy prepaid Japanese Nintendo eShop cards online, which can be used to redeem eshop credit without disclosing their country of origin.
