Pokemon World Championships 2024 TCG Player Disqualified Due To “Unsportsmanlike Conduct”
Earlier this week, The Pokemon Company hosted the 2024 edition of the Pokemon World Championships, holding tournaments for Pokemon Scarlet/Violet, Pokemon Unite, the Trading Card Game, and more.
During the quarterfinals of the Pokemon TCG Masters bracket, competitor Ian Robb was disqualified from the tournament, despite winning his match against Fernando Cifuentes. According to a statement issued to Comicbook.com, Robb was retroactively handed a loss due to “unsportsmanlike conduct”. Although not explicitly confirmed, many believe that this refers to a hand gesture Robb made after winning the match, which some would consider “obscene”.

Further rubbing salt in the wound, Cifuentes went on to win the entire championship after Robb’s disqualification. Depending on whether this is considered a full disqualification, Robb has potentially lost out on a guaranteed $20,000 from making it to the semi-finals, although he could still recoup at least $15,000 if he’s still considered one of the Top 8.
