Random: Link Almost Spoke In The Legend Of Zelda Echoes Of Wisdom
Earlier this year, Nintendo released The Legend Of Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom, one of the very few series entries that features Princess Zelda as the main character with Link in a supporting role.
In an interview with Famitsu (translated by VGC), director Satoshi Terada and producer Eiji Aonuma revealed that it was almost also one of the few entries where Link had spoken dialogue. Traditionally, Link was always the mute protagonist of the Legend Of Zelda games, so he would either never talk at all, or players would never see any of his dialogue, only the reactions of people he was speaking to.
Since Zelda would be the main character this time, the team considered letting Link have written lines for the first time in a mainline Zelda game. However, it seems the team were unable to come up with satisfying dialogue for Link, and they instead created a story scenario where Link would still be mute.
Aonuma: “Actually, Link was speaking at first,”
Terada: “I had Link talk a little bit, no matter what I made him say, it just didn’t feel right.”
Aonuma: “Link would never speak like that, it felt really strange. Nobody knew what Link would say – that’s only natural, because he’s never spoken before. So we had to come up with a setting where he couldn’t speak, and that’s how we came up with part of the story.”
