Rumor: Leaked Internal Document Reveals Why Mega Jynx Was Scrapped
Last week, a piece of concept art for Mega Jynx surfaced online, finally confirming that the form had been scrapped after many years of speculation about its existence.
Now, some new internal documents from Game Freak have appeared, seemingly from the data breach the company suffered earlier this year. This internal document supposedly discusses various reasons why certain Pokemon designs were scrapped or changed based on feedback about potential controversies. Among them is an entry for Mega Jynx, explaining that it might be better to scrap the design for fears of reigniting controversy surrounding the Ice/Psychic Pokemon’s design.
For those who may not be aware, Jynx’s design came under criticism in the early 2000s for seemingly being based on negative African American stereotypes. In response, Game Freak altered Jynx’s design to distance it from these stereotypes, including changing its skin to purple and its arms to white. It seems that Game Freak was wary about putting Jynx in the spotlight again after all the trouble, and hence opted not to give it a Mega Evolution by the end of Pokemon X and Y‘s development.
As with all rumors of this nature, we caution readers to take them with a grain of salt. Stay tuned for more as it comes.
