Rumor: Nintendo Added Support For VRR & Up To 240 FPS In Internal Game Engine
Amidst heavy speculation about an upcoming successor to the Nintendo Switch, it seems Nintendo themselves may have left a hint about their next console’s capabilities in one of its recently launched titles.
Dataminer Oatmealdome recently shared a snippet of code discovered in the recently released Endless Ocean Luminous. The game runs on the latest version of Nintendo’s Bezel Engine, and the code snippet seems to suggest that it now supports Variable Refresh Rate (VRR), and a maximum of 240 FPS. It is believed that this may have been to facilitate backwards compatibility, with the Switch’s successor being able to take advantage of these features and run the game at much higher frame rates.

The latest version of the engine appears to support higher frame rates like 240fps? (The Switch can only output 60 fps.)
This only applies to games that enable the variable frame rate mode.
Not sure if the older engine versions also support this. pic.twitter.com/5kzm8aM8wx

That said, OatmealDome cautions that just because the setting exists doesn’t mean that any games will eventually be made to take advantage of it, or any hypothetical new console for that matter. We will be sure to report back with more details should they become available.
