During the Kirby Air Riders Direct, Masahiro Sakurai revealed the reason why Kirby Air Riders is called Kirby Air Riders.

He revealed that the title is called Kirby Air Riders because you can choose different kinds of riders in the game, aside from Kirby. These includes characters such as King Dedede and Meta Knight.
