Splatoon 3 Will Allow Players To Choose To Participate In Tricolor Turf Wars In Future Splatfests
With the release of Splatoon 3, players were introduced to Tricolor Battles, a new type of Splatfest Turf War that had three teams of players battling it out to control the map.
Now, after running two Splatfests using Tricolor Battles, Nintendo has decided to implement a few changes to how the format is handled starting from the next one. Firstly, players will now have the ability to choose whether they wish to participate in Tricolor Battles during the second half of the Splatfest. Previously, this was entirely up to the game’s matchmaking system, and with this change, players who do not enjoy the new mode can opt out by their own volition.
SRL optical engineer here with amazing new Tricolor Battle findings! It seems that in the next Splatfest, anyone can opt to join a Tricolor Battle after the Halftime Report. And whether they join solo or with a friend on the same team, they'll always match into a Tricolor Battle! pic.twitter.com/1h4JCE7txh

The other major change is that players from all teams can potentially be the attacking team or defending team in Tricolor Battles. Previously, the Team that was leading by the Halftime Report would always be the defender, while the other two teams would always be the attackers. Under this new system, the leading Team by the Halftime Report will get more “Tricolor Clout” while defending, while the others will get more while attacking.
Finally, the calculus for determining Splatfest winners has changed. A new metric known as Tricolor Clout will be included! The intent behind these changes seems to be to address criticisms from players about the way Tricolor Battles have been handled during the past two Splatfests, Whether these changes will be successful however remains to be seen. Stay tuned for more updates as they come.
