53% Of Japanese People Think That Nintendo Switch 2 Is Expensive

A survey (June 18 – 19, 2025) conducted by the Knowns app asked 2,882 respondents living in Japan how they felt about Nintendo Switch 2, revealing some interesting insights.

According to the results, 60.6% know about the Nintendo Switch 2’s existence, 31.4% said they know about it but aren’t sure about the details, 5.8% said they heard of its name, while 2.2% said they don’t know about it at all. This suggests that most people in Japan know about Nintendo Switch 2.

35.% of respondents said they have applied for a Nintendo Switch 2 pre-order lottery, and of those who did apply for one, 26.8% said they secured a console, while the remaining 73.2% said they failed to get one through this method.

In addition, 45.5% of those who failed to secure a Switch 2 in a lottery plan to “definitely register on a lottery again”, 35.5% said they will do it if they could, 11.3% said they aren’t sure, while 7.6% responded that they don’t want to sign up for a lottery again.

Those who took part in the survey were also asked about the system’s price. While Japan has the lowest Nintendo Switch 2 prices in the world, the Japanese-Language systems sold there come with a set of restrictions. Despite the lowest pricing, 53.5% felt that the system is expensive, 42.2% thought it’s alright, and 4.3% said it’s cheap.

When asked about the prices that scalpers are selling the Nintendo Switch 2 at, 48.8% said it’s too expensive so they aren’t interested, 22.5% said they could tolerate the price if the markup was moderate, 17.4% said they would buy it even if it’s expensive, and 11.4% are not interested at all. This suggests that almost 40% of respondents are open to the idea of buying from scalpers.

Finally, when asked about how they thought about the behavior of those scalping Nintendo Switch 2, 57.9% said it is immoral, 24.9% thought it’s not really good but it can’t be helped, 9.4% said there are no issues at all, and 7.8% said they never had a problem with this behavior. These numbers suggest that most Japanese do not look kindly on scalping.
