Nintendo Switch Sold Over 5 Million Units In Japan For 2021
With 2021 behind us, Famitsu and GamesIndustry.biz have revealed some updated sales figures showing how well the Switch did for the year in Japan.
According to Famitsu’s data, the Switch sold around 5.3 million units in Japan between December 28, 2020 and December 19, 2021. This figure includes the combined sales of the Switch, Switch Lite and OLED model. Astonishingly, this figure is five times more than all other console sales combined, with the PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X|S and 3DS selling only 1.1 million units combined during that same period.
The Switch’s performance in Japan for 2021 is a little better compared to 2020, where it sold around 5.1 million units. GamesIndustry.biz goes on to suggest that the hybrid console’s continued success for the year can largely be attributed to the launch of Monster Hunter Rise, Pokémon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl, and Super Mario 3D World + Bowser’s Fury.
As the Switch enters its fifth year on the market, it will be interesting to see if its momentum will continue. We will be sure to report back with more developments as they come.
