Ever since it was re-released in 2017, Mario Kart 8 Deluxe has consistently placed in the top of the Switch’s sales charts, and recently became the best selling entry in the series of all time.

This massive success has led many to wonder if Nintendo will ever release a new installment in the franchise or continue to coast along on 8‘s success. In an interview with GamesIndustry.biz, Tokyo-based industry consultant Dr. Serkan Toto claimed that Mario Kart 9 is in fact in “active development” at Nintendo, and could be revealed later this year. He also claimed that it would feature “a new twist” on the series, but did not elaborate on what this could be.

I am aware Mario Kart 8 Deluxe is still selling very well on the Nintendo Switch, but Mario Kart 9 is in active development (and comes with a new twist) and Nintendo could tease it this year. On mobile, Nintendo has been very silent since Mario Kart Tour’s launch in 2019, but I think 2022 is when we will see an established IP arriving on smart devices again.

If Toto’s claims are true, a Mario Kart 9 reveal could be a nice addition to Nintendo’s already stacked roster for 2022. We will be sure to report back on all the details as they come.
