Miyamoto Explains Why He Doesn’t Want To Make A MMORPG, Looks Back At Smartphones And Minecraft

During CEDEC 2018, Nintendo fellow and legendary game designer Shigeru Miyamoto looked back at the last 10 years of gaming.

One of the things Miyamoto discussed was his reluctance in making a MMORPG. Miyamoto explained he didn’t want to make one because he was against its billing model and did not want to keep making one game. MMORPGs tend to require a lot of new content and maintenance, and Miyamoto disliked that kind of development cycle.

Miyamoto also shared his thoughts on the spread of smartphones. He pointed out that due to smartphones, the number of people who have access to games in their pocket has increased. He also joked that “The DS was already doing this” before he could say “[Steve] Jobs is doing ‘touch!’”

On the success of Minecraft, Miyamoto was surprised by its incredible success and felt regretful that Nintendo didn’t come up with the game. The creator revealed he had an idea for a game involving building blocks, but couldn’t figure out what kind of genre it would be. Miyamoto was impressed after seeing someone’s convenience store built in Minecraft, as well as its gameplay and accessibility.
