Last month, we learned that Charles Martinet would be stepping down from voicing Mario in the videogames, and moving into a new role as “Mario Ambassador”.
Naturally, many are wondering what the role of “Mario Ambassador” entails. However, it seems Martinet himself might be just in the dark as everyone else. Speaking at a panel for GalaxyCon Austin 2023, Martinet briefly discussed the change, stating that he “didn’t know” what a Mario Ambassador was, but that we will surely learn more as time goes on.
“I am now, you might have seen the news, I’m a Mario Ambassador, I don’t know what that is yet, I’m not retired as it were, but I’m an ambassador and as we step forward into the future I will learn, we’ll all learn what exactly that is but in the meantime…I’m always an ambassador of Nintendo and Mario and all of these events because I just cherish every moment of it, and I hope your love of the games continues and grows the way mine does, so thank you so much.”
Nintendo previously said that there would be a joint announcement video from Charles Martinet and Shigeru Miyamoto regarding the former’s stepping down from voicing Mario, so perhaps we will get more clear answers when that video finally drops. Stay tuned for more updates as they come.
